Rosie Dyer was born to the union of Samuel and Florence Johnson
in Grenada, Ms. She and Louis B. Dyer have been married for 30
years and have one daughter, Rosa.
With 33 years of service, Mrs. Dyer was a graduate of Champaign
Beauty School. She earned her B.S. and M.S. degrees from the National
Institute of Cosmetologists. She served as president of the Twin
City Cosmetologists and the Alpha Chi Sorority and has been a
member of the Twin City Cosmetologists since it was founded in
October 1960.
Mrs. Dyer is a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church. Presently
Mrs. Dyer is serving on the Senior Usher Board. In the past, she
served as Director of the Junior Ushers and Pacers and on the
committee for Christian Education.
Mrs. Dyer has made many contributions to her profession and to
the community. She hosted a fundraiser for the AIDS benefit for
Frances Nelson Health Center and for the Adopt Douglass Park Association.
She has volunteered at Covenant Medical Center for the past 18
years and she is a member of the Concerned Citizens for a Better
Neighborhood. She also served on the committee for the Champaign
Douglass Branch Library - Frederick Douglass Memorial. Mrs. Dyer
is a member at large with the National Council of Negro Women.
Awards include: the Park District Appreciation for Volunteer
Service award, the Community Service Award for Concerned Citizens
for a Better Neighborhood and a Certificate of Achievement from
the Institute for the Research and Development of Competency Based
Teacher's Education Program, Wayne State University College of
Education, Detroit.
