My home as a child was a place where there was a tremendous amount
of caring and sharing. My parents, even with nine children were
always reaching out to help others. This is what I observed throughout
childhood and it took root in my spirit. I too wanted to help
somebody. I was reminded, it's not what you have, it's what you
do with what you have that makes the difference. Mama and Dad
didn't have a lot, but seemed to accomplish a lot. There was such
joy, commitment and enthusiasm in what they did. I liked that.
They did everything wholeheartedly.
I am grateful for the passion I feel. Passion is just a great
love, a love that produces conviction. Passionate conviction will
motivate you to do all you can for whoever you can, whenever you
can, in all the ways you can.
I have taught many science classes for students and staff at
Wiley School, incarcerated women at the Champaign County Correctional
Center, the Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club, youth ministry groups,
and worked with a team to raise money for scholarships to College-bound
youth. For nine years, I have served on the Champaign County Mental
Health Board. Presently, I am a member of the Board of Directors
of the Orpheum Children's Science Museum, and new Chairperson
of the Education Committee of the Champaign County Chapter of
the NAACP. All of the above as well as my local, district and
state church work give me the opportunity to share that passion.
