CharLotte Nesbitt was born on January 18, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois,
the daughter of Grady and Helen Neither. She was the 3rd child
of 9 born of this union. At a young age, her family moved to
Danville, Illinois.
CharLotte moved to San Antonio, Texas to attend St. Mary's Catholic
Academy (Boarding School) from 1st grade to 6th grades. She returned
to Danville, Illinois and completed 7th and 8th grades at Washington
Grade School. At Washington, she was an Honor Roll Student and
a Cheerleader. She graduated from Danville High School in 1955.
She attended the University of Chicago for 1 year and during that
time, she met and began dating Mr. Bruce Nesbitt. In 1956, she
returned to Danville
and worked at the "Three Sisters" Dress Shop. In 1957,
she was married to Mr. Bruce Nesbitt and moved to Champaign, Illinois,
and to this union were born 2 daughters and 2 sons. In addition,
she also raised a foster son.
She has been a member of several organizations, among them being,
the Y.W.C.A. where she was involved with the Black Woman's Achievement
Dinner , was a member of the African-American History Committee,
created the Adopt-A-Book Program, a member of the Reading Group,
and member of Family Service Advisory Board..
She attended Parkland College for 1 year and during her professional
career, she was employed at the Carle Clinic and the Department
of Public Aid for a few years, the Champaign Public Library System
for 19 years, most of which time was at the Douglass Branch Library
where she was instrumental in establishing many enrichment programs
involving both youth and adults and was responsible for the Oral
History Interviews.
